Parallax is used to calculate the distance to the Moon. Consider two observers, 500 km apart, making simultaneous sightings of the moon and a distant star. Observer A sees the star aligned with the edge of the Moon. Observer B sees the star away from edge by a measurable angle. With some simple trigonometry, the distance to the Moon can be calculated. Details. Next. |
