Hubble Deep Field Objects Classification Instructions

Forty five objects, located on the Hubble Space Telecope’t three main CCD sensors are marked on the main images. Your task is to classify them

To switch between CCD sensors, click on the CCD Sensor Map.



Step One: View each numbered object at full scale.

Click on an object in the main image to place its image in the full scale window.



Step Two - Write the Object’s Type and Colour

On the worksheet, in the space provided,

1. write the object’s type – choose from:

Star, Circular Galaxy, Elliptical Galaxy, Spiral Galaxy or Irregular Galaxy


2. Write the object’s colour – choose from:

Red, Yellow, White, Blue


Step Three - Check your classification

After you have written down your classification, click on the full scale window. The classification decided upon by the Hubble Telescope’s astronomers will be displayed. Tick your classification if it matches. Change it if it doesn’t.




Repeat the three steps one above until all forty five objects have been classified.
